With how his year started, it feels weird that Rory McIlroy has only won three times this season—yes, typing only three wins did feel ridiculous. But after victories at Pebble, Sawgrass, and Augusta National, many thought, including myself, that the Northern Irishman was bound for five or six Ws in 2025.
But that’s not how his year has unfolded. Still, he’s back at East Lake with a chance to win his fourth FedExCup title.
And after a little lull after his Masters win, he’s found his game again since missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open. He’s rattled off five straight top-20 finishes, including a share of second at the Scottish Open and a tie for 12th at last week’s BMW Championship, the second leg of the postseason.
TOUR Championship: How to Watch
McIlroy has loved him some East Lake Golf Club over the years—a fact confirmed by his three season-long titles—and if trends tell us anything, he’ll hoist the two trophies up for grabs once again come Sunday.
The 29-time winner won the FedExCup in 2016, 2019, and 2022. If you’re good with numbers, that equates to every three years. And again, if you’re good at math, it’s been three years since he’s won the Cup.
Coincidence? Yeah, probably, but I’m a sucker for a good trend!
McIlroy will have the privilege of playing his first 18 holes Thursday with Scottie Scheffler, a man who’s stolen Player of the Year honors away from him with his late-season charge and two major championship titles.
For McIlroy, this week at East Lake seems like the perfect way to not only cap off his season but to make that POTY conversation a little tighter.
