It's lore echos the famed grounds of East Lake.
After the significant restoration of the course, the club also took to revamping its halfway house and its menu. The main idea behind a successful and delicious at-the-turn menu was to create yummy bites that are easy to consume while walking. Things can't be too complicated, and yet you always want people satiated and ready to tackle the rest of their round.
Mac’s Shack, the unofficial name of the halfway house at the club, named after long-time employee Mac Tomlinson who's known to be a bit of a foodie, has one menu item that stands out above the rest—a smash burger.
The beauty of a smash burger lies in its thin patty. It's not like a standard burger that overwhelms your senses. You're getting all the savory perks of ordering a burger without the heavy, and bloat-y after-effects.
The crispy, rough edges add a bit of crunch while the rest of the patty melts in your mouth, along with the melted cheese—and every smash burger has a go-to sauce that's the decadent cherry on top.
Legend has it, aka according to Golf.com, the genesis of the now infamous burger was a in-house competition between East Lake employees. The recipe is a combination of two entries from the little experiment. The key that makes it East Lake's rendition so delicious? The wagyu beef used for the patties and the signature "Waggle" sauce" (it's basically a spicy aioli).
I've never had one, but I hear it's one of the best things you can eat.
Juicy, tender beef perched on top a soft, buttery potato roll glued together by gooey American cheese slices and the sauce—what could be better?
That said, next year I'm going to need the TOUR and East Lake to go ahead and add this traditional American delicacy to the concessions menu for us all to enjoy.
I mean, just picture it—you're absolutely famished from trekking the surprising sloped hills of East Lake in the Atlanta heat and you need some sustenance to re-fuel you. Wouldn't a smash burger with an ice cold Diet Coke hit the spot? I'm practically one of Pavlov's dogs just thinking about it.
With a revamped course and the season finale—TOUR Championship deserves a special, curated menu that stands out among the rest.
But for now, the juicy delectable slice of heaven is reserved for members and guests only—but there's another smash burger/golf joint in the south east that's making waves in the food influencer sphere.
If any course needs an official taste-tester of any and all smash burgers, I know someone who's available.
