Scottie Scheffler hasn’t had his best stuff so far this week in Pittsburgh. A day after signing for a 3-over 73, the World No. 1 made four birdies and five bogeys around Oakmont Country Club on Friday and is 4-over for the tournament.
He’s safely made it to the weekend, but he has some serious work to do on Moving Day if he has any hope of claiming the third leg of the Career Grand Slam.
After finishing up his second 18, Scheffler headed to the range to get some work in. Cameras caught the Texan having an animated exchange with his long-time coach, Randy Smith.
I went down to the range to have a look for myself, and without knowing what kind of shot he was trying to hit, it looked like his right elbow was getting a little stuck on the way down, forcing him to flip it at the bottom. Based on the movement of his caddie, Ted Scott, they were trying to find a feel to get Scheffler’s arms back in front of him on the way down.
Again, I couldn’t hear anything they were saying nor do I know what kind of shot Scheffler was trying to hit, but it looked like he was struggling to cut the ball, his natural, stock shot.
We’ll see if this extra time in the practice area results in a Saturday charge from the best player in the world.
