Ever since LIV Golf’s arrival, it’s been the PGA TOUR vs. the Saudi-backed circuit. Whether it came to major wins, TV numbers, or gallery size, golf fans have loved to compare the two leagues to each other.
All that talk came to a head at last year’s U.S. Open, when Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau battled it out at Pinehurst No. 2—just imagine if they were in the same group, that would have been a day!
But fast forward to April, and that exact scenario played out amongst the Georgia Pines at Augusta National. McIlroy and DeChambeau were paired together with the Green Jacket on the line, and that day ended with the Northern Irishman claiming his fifth major championship title and Career Grand Slam.
In my opinion, the greatest Masters of my lifetime.
And now there’s finally a potential rubber match on the horizon: the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
McIlroy is already locked into a spot on the European squad, and DeChambeau has been told by USA captain Keegan Bradley that he’ll be one of the 12 Americans in New York.
“I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that's going to be rooting for Team USA,” he told the media at Royal Portrush last week.
And at the Happy Gilmore 2 premiere, DeChambeau added some more heat to the fire in regards to a potential Sunday Singles match-up with McIlroy.
“I’ll be chirping in his ear this time. Now, if we go up against each other, I mean you can be sure of it. I’ll get into his ear a little bit,” he told People.
If you remember, DeChambeau mentioned after the final round of the Masters that McIlroy didn’t talk to him all day. Didn’t converse, didn’t share a look—because you have to be best friends with someone you’re trying to beat at a major!
If this actually happens, if we actually get a McIlroy vs. DeChambeau battle on Sunday of the Ryder Cup, the golf won’t even be the best part. I’ll be watching for what a “chirp” from the Big Golfer will be. He doesn’t exactly give off the vibes of a great trash talker.
One thing that he’ll definitely have, however, is the crowd's support. I can’t imagine a New York crowd is going to be too kind to the Europeans, let alone Mr. McIlroy.
