These Names Won't See the Weekend at the AIG Women's Open—Here's Who Missed the Cut

Players struggled on day two at Royal Porthcawl—from recent major champions to former world No.1s—a handful of big names are headed home after the first 36.

Royal Porthcawl upped the ante during Friday's second round of the AIG Women's Open. As some players were dropping birdies and climbing the leaderboard, it was total carnage for others—with the course proving itself to be major championship-worthy.

Leader Miyu Yamashita fired a squeaky clean, bogey-free 65 during the second round, bringing the lead to 11-under par. She has a three shot lead over Rio Takeda.

Lottie Woad surged early, at one point climbing to 5-under par for the tournament but had a disastrous triple bogey on the par 4 16th. Woad was looking her usual birdie making self for much of the day, but hit an errant tee shot that left her out of scoring position.

With an unlucky lie that caused her to take a swipe at the ball without advancing it further, the 21-year-old was forced to take an unplayable. After the round she provided some insight as to what occurred, "Yeah, I think it's [the 16th], probably the toughest hole on the course. The tee shot is hard to hit the fairway, and then you've got 3-wood into a very strong wind. Anything that's missing the target is going to be exaggerated.

So pushed it and got a pretty unlucky lie. Wasn't too thick around there apart from where I was. So couldn't really do much with that. But the two pars after that wasn't too bad."

Woad sits at 2-under for the tournament, along with hometown hero Darcey Harry and world No.1 Nelly Korda.

The cut lined was shifting a touch towards the end, with several players hovering around that line, but one player will be celebrating a bit harder than the others, even being 12 shots off the leader. Former world No.1 and beloved left-handed putter Yani Tseng has made her first cut since July 2018. Welcome back to the weekend, Yani!

Big Names Who Missed the Cut at the AIG Women's Open

Rose Zhang (72-76, +4)

The struggles continue for Zhang who has cited issues with a neck injury earlier this year. She's coming off her best major finish this season at Evian, where she finished T-35. She was forced to miss the Chevron Championship, she missed the cut at the U.S. Women's Open, and finished 73rd at the KPMG Women's PGA.

This is her fifth missed cut in nine starts.

Brooke Henderson (71-76, +3)

It's been a pretty unspectacular year for the young Canadian star. She's not playing poorly, but she isn't playing up to the major championship caliber we've seen her play at before. Henderson's best finish so far this season is T-9 for a non-major and T-31 at Evian.

Hinako Shibuno (72-72, +3)

Shibuno only has one career win and it came at the 2019 AIG Women's Open. We've seen her in the mix at plenty of events, most recently at the USWO at Erin Hills, where she finished inside the top-10. But it's been rather rocky ever since. With five missed cuts in her last six starts.

Ruoning Yin (74-77, +7)

Yin is another young major champion that has had so much success at previous majors but seems to be coming up a bit short recently. She placed inside the top five at the first two majors of the season, Chevron and the USWO, and has missed the cut at the last two.

Jin Young Ko (78-73, +7)

It's been quite some time since we've seen this former world No.1 has been in the winner's circle and this is the second consecutive year that she's missed the cut at AIG.

Lilia Vu (74-77, +7)

The 2023 AIG Champion's struggles continue. This is her sixth consecutive missed cut. Vu has failed to see the weekend at every major since Chevron.

Maja Stark (74-78, +8)

This is the fifth LPGA event we've seen Stark tee it up in since her USWO win, and her fourth missed cut.

Yealimi Noh (78-77, +11)

After starting the season off hot, Noh has faltered a bit this summer. This is her third consecutive missed cut.
