Scottie Scheffler put on a damn clinic Friday at the Houston Open. It was surgical. To be honest, he made it look a little too easy for my liking—this game is hard AF and it didn’t make me feel too great about myself and the 79 I posted last week.
He hit nine of 13 fairways, 17 of 18 greens, and made 112 feet of putts. It all added up to a bogey-free 8-under 62 that matched the course record he set back in 2021.
He’s the undisputed best ball-striker in the world. He doesn’t miss the middle of the clubface and rarely needs to scramble—but when he does, he follows up with one of the best short games in the sport.
The only way for his peers to beat him is if he has an off week with the putter. But with the countdown to the Masters under two weeks, Scheffler is starting to feel it with the flat-stick....and that’s terrifying.
During a 3-under opening round Thursday, Scheffler gained over 2.5 strokes on the greens. On Friday, that number jumped to over 3.6.
When his putter gets hot, it’s not a fair fight.
Should this performance from the World No. 1 surprise you? Well, no. He’s winless on the year and a motivated Scheffler is a dangerous thing. My buddy Cameron Jourdan is on the ground covering the event for Golfweek this week and told me Scheffler’s had a discernible edge to him through the first few days. That tells me he’s locked in and focused on grabbing a title before driving down Magnolia Lane.

Plus, he’s finished runner-up twice in his last three trips to Memorial Park. Something about this muni fits his eye and it’s seemingly all coming together for the world’s best.
There’s plenty of golf left and there are several names right there on his heels, but if Scheffler’s putter stays en fuego over the weekend, we all know what the outcome will be.
He’s really gonna win a third Green Jacket, isn’t he?
