The Hawaii swing is reportedly now a thing of the past.
According to the Sports Business Journal, the PGA TOUR has decided not to hold its season-opener in Hawaii in 2027. SBJ says The Sentry is no more, while the PGA TOUR is considering making the Sony Open a PGA TOUR Champions event.
While the Sony Open was played in January—won by Chris Gotterup—The Sentry was cancelled due to water issues on the island.
“We are grateful to The Plantation Course at Kapalua, Kapalua Resort, Maui County and the State of Hawaii for their longtime support of our season-opening PGA Tour event, as well as the fans, partners and volunteers across Maui who have supported the event throughout the years. The PGA Tour will share more details regarding its 2027 schedule at a later date,” the TOUR wrote in a statement to the SBJ.

Back in March at THE PLAYERS, TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp mentioned that they would like to start the season on the West Coast at an iconic venue. SBJ mentioned that its industry sources have said a likely spot would be Torrey Pines.
As a fan, this is a bummer. There was nothing like sitting at home in the Northeast, with nothing but snow outside, enjoying the vistas of the Plantation Course at Kapalua. Not having that next year will be strange.
With next year’s schedule very much still up in the air, Rolapp is expected to hold a press conference at the Travelers Championship in June. Hopefully, we’ll have a clearer picture of 2027 when that rolls around.
