I can’t wait for this. We really might see Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda play as a team in the Olympics. Does it get any better than that?
On Tuesday, the International Golf Federation confirmed the International Olympic Committee Executive Board approved the addition of the mixed-team event and it will debut in Los Angeles in 2028. Riviera Country Club, the annual host of the Genesis Invitational, is the host venue for all Olympic golf in three years.
The mixed event will be a 36-hole competition. The first round will be foursomes (alternate shot), while the second round will be four-ball (best ball). Each country will have a maximum of one team and both players have to be already part of the Olympics. It will be played after the men’s golf competition and before the women’s.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to see a Mixed-Team Event added to the programme for Los Angeles 2028,” said IGF executive director Antony Scanlon. “Golf was incredibly successful at Paris 2024, and as we continue building on the momentum from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, we’re excited to bring even more attention to our sport through this additional format. The athletes were very enthusiastic about their desire to play with their compatriots, and we look forward to watching them compete together in Los Angeles.”
If you need some examples of the pairings we could see in 2028, let’s run through a few.
United States: Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda
Ireland: Rory McIlroy and Leona Maguire
Sweden: Ludvig Aberg and Linn Grant
Australia: Min Woo Lee and Minjee Lee
Great Britain: Tommy Fleetwood and Charley Hull
Canada: Corey Conners and Brooke Henderson
Pretty, pretty good. This could end up being the best of all three golf events at the LA Olympics.
