Fred Couples is making his 40th start at the Masters this week. Yes, his 40th! Unbelievable longevity from the 1992 Green Jacket winner.
At the 2023 edition of the year’s first major championship, Couples became the oldest player to ever make it to the weekend at the age of 63. Something about this place unlocks a little magic for the player affectionately known as “Boom Boom.”
Well, we saw a little more of that magic from Couples on Thursday during the opening round and it didn’t take too long.
With putter long and left of the first green, Couples drained his third for an opening birdie. To say the people loved it would be an understatement.
After playing his next 12 holes in 2 over—he made double on the par-5 13th—Couples had 191 yards into the par-4 14th and did the unthinkable.
He drained it for an eagle.
After four straight pars to finish up his round, Couples signed for a 1-under 71!
It really is something about this place. It loves Fred and he loves it right back. So, so good.
