Rory McIlroy's Masters win is good for golf. It doesn't matter who you were rooting for during the final round at Augusta National, if you care about golf at all, you can respect when a golfer achieves the illustrious Career Grand Slam. I don't care if it takes 11 months or 11 years, anyone who can hold on to win four majors deserves a spot in the history books.
It was also impossible to ignore the sheer emotion (and likely relief) pouring from McIlroy from the second he holed that final putt to win the playoff over Justin Rose. You have to be happy for the guy.
And like clockwork, golf social media took to the keyboard to give props to the newest owner of that slick Green Jacket.
Tiger Woods welcomed McIlroy to the elite Career Grand Slam club. Woods also completed his Grand Slam (also referred to as a Tiger Slam) at the 2001 Masters Tournament. In addition to Woods (and now McIlroy) five others have all four majors under their belt: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.
To no surprise, Justin Rose—one of the classiest golfers on the planet—was quick to post a congrats after a few very complimentary post-round interviews at the course.
"This is a historic moment in golf, isn't it, someone who achieves the Career Grand Slam. I just said it was pretty cool to be able to share that moment with him," Rose said moments after the playoff ended. "Obviously I wanted to be the bad guy today, but still, it's a momentous occasion for the game of golf."
There's been a lot of chatter and frustration heard from players over having a microphone shoved in their faces after a tough round, but Rose is miles above.
Nike Golf made us all a little more emotional with a quick ode to the Irishman that's been an ambassador for the brand since 2013.
Outside of the golf world, celebs from across the spectrum showed their support and giving us a glimpse into how deep the McIlroy fandom runs from his hometown Holywood Golf Club to elite Hollywood circles.
I'll leave you with one last scene from McIlroy's hometown that is just too pure to leave out.
