Golf is a game of patience and manners, which is what makes the hot heads, the emotional dramatists, the heart-on-sleevers all the more appealing.
Backdropped against a place like Augusta National Golf Club, where adherence to tradition is paramount, the game's outspoken personalities walk a tightrope between using the passion that fuels them and making sure they don't move foul of the Masters' governing body.
Players like Wyndham Clark, Robert MacIntyre, Jon Rahm, and Tyrell Hatton have succeeded in large part because of the emotions they ride to incredible performances on the course. At Augusta, where good shots and bad shots are separated by inches, these players have found varying levels of success through two rounds.
Another animated player who's had a helluva start to his Masters tourney? None other than European Ryder Cup mainstay and the Tour's resident hot head, Tyrell Hatton. The British golfer had little to complain about on Friday, turning in an absolutely electrifying six-under 66. He became just the third player since 1997 to hit every green in regulation, leaving him absolutely nothing about which he could lose his cool.
We know Wyndham Clark is no stranger to controversy caused by his temper, but at Augusta National on Friday he channeled all of that energy into something positive. He turned in one of the best rounds of the day, carding a 4-under 68. He seemingly has made up for some of the anger he caused earlier in the week when he referred to to the par 3 contest as “great birth control.” Between hard-launching a new relationship; vaulting himself into a tie for seventh as of publishing time on Friday; and firing off some spicy child-rearing takes, Clark has had a rather eventful start to his 2026 Masters.

Oh, Rahmbo...What are we to do with you? The 2023 Masters Champion is sitting right at the +4 cutline after shooting a 2 under 70 on Friday. I'm no mathematician, but that does suggest that the perennial Green Jacket contender shot a 78 on Thursday. Regarding his 6 over round, Rahm said on Friday, “Yesterday was just an anomaly, where everything that could go wrong, went wrong.” It's good to see the fiery Spaniard righted the ship, and now he has to wait to see where the cut line lands.
Another European Ryder Cup player, Robert MacIntyre, has become one of the main storylines at Augusta for all the wrong reasons. It's the exact sort of publicity The Masters wants to avoid. After dumping his second shot into the water on 15 on Thursday, MacIntyre spotted a camera and flipped it off. He went on to card an 80. Though he went 1 under on Friday, it was too much ground to make up and he'll be heading home from The Masters early. At least he'll be doing so with a sense of humor.
While former American Ryder Cup captain (and Masters winner) Zach Johnson is generally affable, he's proven to be susceptible to the occasional heckle. At the 2024 Masters, he told some fans to...go away in a less than appropriate manner. He might be saying the same thing to his golf game after shooting back to back 75s to miss the cut at the 2026 tourney.
