Rory McIlroy was bummed earlier this week that the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black is being remembered for awful fan behavior instead of Europe's incredible victory on foreign soil. Everyone and their mother has had something to say about the New York fans, and that includes Gary Player.
Player recently spoke with The Palm Beach Post and said that it left him in a state of “shock.”
"I think, what would Ben Hogan have said, you know? What would Byron Nelson have said? What would Arnold Palmer…if Arnold Palmer saw that today…” Player said. He added he was “disgusted” and the Ryder Cup is currently “in shambles.”
But here’s the take you all came to see.
"I love the fact that they say 'USA, USA.' I love (how) the British respond in their way,” Player said. “I think that's exciting. But the Ryder Cup to me is the worst event in the world.”
Woah!
You might be thinking, ‘Well, he must have had a similar experience to make a comment like that.’ But, that’s just not the case. Player, who is from South Africa, isn’t eligible for the Ryder Cup.
I’ve been as outspoken as anyone when it comes to the disturbing behavior we saw from the fans on Long Island on Day 2 of the Cup. It was gnarly. Hell, McIlroy had a beer thrown on him and his wife, Erica. But it hasn’t ruined the event for me. I can’t wait for Adare Manor in 2027.
The Ryder Cup, outside of the Masters, is my favorite event in the sport. It’s emotional, it’s fiery, it means something to the guys wearing the flags. It sucks that one nasty day has created a black cloud over the whole thing.
"Golf has been a gentleman's sport,” Player said. “So, and to see that, and to see the players using this 'F' word, I mean, the whole lot."
