Rules hardos won’t be too happy about this—the first round of the 3M Open was played with preferred lies—but Adam Svensson posted a new course record around TPC Twin Cities on Thursday, signing for an 11-under 60!
Just a few minutes before the Canadian dropped in a 48-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th, Sam Stevens posted a course-record-tying 9-under 62. But now no one will remember that impressive day.
"I just didn't want to leave it short, it was carrying a little bit of speed, and Jace gave me a good line, and it just happened to go in," Svensson said after his round.
3M Open: How to Watch, Tee Times
Svensson, who missed the cut at four of his last five starts entering the week in Blaine, Minnesota, hit 11 fairways, 16 greens, and made 192 feet of putts on his way to the record mark—that’ll play more often than not.
"I had a great range session today," he said. "Just really putted amazing, I made a bunch of breakers. It was probably my best putting round I ever had so I'm pretty happy."
The one-time PGA TOUR winner made five birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 30, and added three straight birdies to begin his homeward nine. And after another circle at the 16th, he poured in the aforementioned eagle at the last to finish off his bogey-free effort.
As for some of the other names who were feeling it on Day 1, Rickie Fowler continued his run of strong play with a 6-under 65. Max Homa, who had a chance to win the John Deere Classic a few weeks back, played a solid round and finished his 5-under day with a birdie at the ninth—it’s always going to be an easy day at the office when you hit all 18 greens.
And Kevin Kisner, yes, the NBC broadcaster, posted a first-round 4-under 67. Kiz tied for eighth at the ISCO Championship a few weeks ago, the opposite-field event to the Genesis Scottish Open.
A major championship hangover is a real thing, but when big names play this well, it’s a lot easier to lock back in. Let’s have a weekend!
