The Problem With Bryson DeChambeau's Galaxy Brain

I think Bryson DeChambeau is good for golf. I also think his efforts to grow the game through YouTube and his treatment of young golfers across the world are ultimately what we need more of.

That doesn’t mean I have to like his inflated ego, perpetual antics, and omnipresent attitude of “look at me.” The content machine is getting a little old to me.

We don’t have to turn the clock back too far for the last instance. At The Open last month, he held the tournament hostage after stomping around in the fescue. Volunteers couldn’t go home thanks to a midnight range session, players had to wait around for their tee times, and media members stayed behind just to be asked if they’d like a snack instead of having their questions answered.

It would have been kind of funny to watch from the outside if it didn’t happen every single time he finds himself in the spotlight.

That brings me to his latest word vomit to the NY Post, which contained some of the least self-aware things I’ve ever read. “Personally, I'd love to be able to play events on the PGA TOUR, too,” he said. “I think that's best for golf. I’d love that. It's not an either/or mentality. It's 'can we do both?' I think that's where everybody wants to be…”

Now, he’s one of the biggest names in the sport, but why in the world would the TOUR or its members want any piece of him? I would lay out all the facts, but Soly from No Laying Up put it perfectly:

Plus, TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp recently told Bloomberg News that he has not and will not consider a merger with LIV Golf as it fights for survival, all but killing DeChambeau's dream of the occasional TOUR appearance.

Then, for the cherry on top, he said, “There isn't a golf fan on the planet who doesn't want to see me play a big TOUR event, and I get that.”

I couldn’t disagree more. I find him semi-bearable four times a year, but anything more than that would feel like a dripping faucet I'm sitting too far away from to turn off. Putting yourself above the sport you play is one of the lamest things you can do, and being adamant every single fan across golf loves you? Even Wayne Szalinski couldn’t shrink that bravado.

LIV and CEO Scott O’Neil are confident they’ve received funding—or what’s recently been reported as a loan—so they can continue to operate even without Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. But will they get enough money to pay back all their promises, a long list that includes a new contract for DeChambeau after this season? And if that doesn’t work out, is the two-time U.S. Open winner destined to play YouTube alone?

Either way, he can want to play on the TOUR all he wants, it’s never going to happen that easily. Those bridges were burned long ago—even if DeChambeau is too delusional to think otherwise.
