Rory McIlroy, who sits in the No. 2 spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs points standings, is skipping next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, the first of three postseason events. And, to be honest, it was easy to see this coming.
With the changes to the TOUR Championship—starting strokes are now a thing of the past—there’s no upside to him trying to overtake Scottie Scheffler. Everyone starts at even at East Lake.
Like Dan said above, it’s going to be hot as hell at TPC Southwind next week. I wouldn’t want to play a meaningless—for Rory at least—four rounds of golf in that stuff. AC sounds a whole lot better.
Plus, it’s just another week to rest at home and prepare for the BMW Championship in Maryland. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few other big names follow in his footsteps.
