Every year, we have the same conversation: what would an amateur golfer shoot at (insert the U.S. Open host venue here)? Justin Thomas is tired of the hypothetical.
“Why don’t we find a way to make it happen? Have a 5, 10, 18 whatever handicap play Monday after the [U.S. Open]," Thomas tweeted Tuesday afternoon, tagging the US Open Golf account. " Back tees full rules of golf, and see what happens?”
He’s right. There’s someone, somewhere that can absolutely set this up.
If we’re looking for ideas, I think a 10 handicap is perfect. An 18 would struggle to break 120, this place is impossible. A 10 is just good enough to hit some fairways, hit a few greens, and not five-putt every surface they find.
Regardless, this is something the USGA should set up every year. I have no clue what the selection process would look like—would it be the same golfer every time? Who knows, but it needs to happen.
Plus, there would be no shortage of volunteers.
