Welcome back to Sim Seeking!
I'm on a discovery journey to find the best indoor golf spots in New York, and you already know that I have to bring y'all along with me. Last week, we ventured out to New Jersey to check out the insanely cool set up at Birdies and Lattes.
This spot is the perfect mash-up of high-tech golf and laidback vibes of a cafe. But what I loved the most about it was the community dynamic. While I was there I got to hang with the regulars, some new folks just dropping in to see what's up, and even kicked it with local college students who treat the space like their study area.
WATCH: Sim Seeking Episode 1 on Birdies and Lattes
Birdies and Lattes was the perfect pilot for this series, but the show must go on and we decided to head way uptown to the Upper East Side—the land of Gossip Girl and over-priced matcha lattes.
For those of you who don't quite know the lore of UES, it's one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Manhattan. It's home to the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art (or just The Met to locals). It's the part of the Manhattan that feels the most like the movies. Think lots of brownstones and luxury high-rises, mommy friend groups pushing their strollers wearing the most subtly expensive outfit you'll ever see, and lots of dogs.
It's very neighborhood friendly, and honestly the kind of crevice of the city you'd find a spot to golf in.
Five Iron is a franchise, and around New York, they've become a staple of golf culture—anyone who plays golf in the city has most likely heard about them. There are several locations across the city, and I have been to a handful of Five Irons before this one so this wasn't a new experience for me per say, but I landed on the UES location because partially because I had heard it's more community driven the other locations.
That's the beauty of NYC, each neighborhood lends itself to the different characters who live and work in that location. The Five Iron in the Financial District has a different vibe than the one near Grand Central—it's hard to articulate it, but trust me on this, each location follows the same recipe but the people are the differentiators that help establish the tone.
Separate from this series, we actually did a bit at the Five Iron in Grand Central with the golf-obsessed Broadway star MK Morrissey last fall that showcased a perfect day as New York City golfers—so check that out if you haven't already.

But back to our sim seeking search, what really stood out to me about this particular spot was the amount of kids running around the space and how the staff build out space for kids to play!
I think we timed things up perfectly to be around when schools were letting out, so there was an influx of young people just hanging out. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, going to the driving range after school and hitting balls with my friends, doing half of our homework before dueling in putting competitions.
This was my first time seeing Five Iron serve more than just the adult population, it was a real-life glimpse into how multi-purposeful these spaces are meant to be, and how golf spans generations even in the Big Apple. Their golf looks a whole lot different than mine growing up, but the sentiment remains the same.
At any Five Iron you know what you're going to get with the golf and tech, but I do encourage you to try out different locations and see which one may be the right fit for you!
