LeBron James is just the latest high-profile athlete or celebrity who has recently taken up golf—imagining playing a round with a six-foot, nine-inch, 250-pound athletic specimen breaks my brain a little bit.
But he’s already got the look down, all the way to the cigar hanging from his mouth.
He recently sat down with NBA legend Steve Nash for an interview on the “Mind the Game” podcast, and he explained how he finally picked up the sticks this offseason.
“I try to stay off the court as much as possible. I actually wanted to challenge the mind with something else, and I actually picked up golf a little bit,” LeBron said. “This is the first time I’ve played an individual sport.”
“There’s no trying to make sure a teammate is in the right spot. Or, I need my teammate to make this right play. Or, he needs me to make the right play in order for us to win. It’s me versus each hole.”
And then he described golf in a way I think we can all agree with.
“It is the most complicated, mind-fuck ever. It’s just you versus the greens. I love that aspect of something that’s so uncomfortable and so hard. I love that.”
But will he keep playing for the next 20-30 years?
“The bug is real,” LeBron said. “I’ve heard about the bug for so many years and I was like, ‘Well, it’s not going to get me. I don’t like golf at all.’ No, it’s real. I’m into it.”
And he's obviously taking it seriously. Look at the conditions this guy is playing through!
Welcome to the club, King! If you ever want a match, let me know.
