Anyone else still reeling or is it just me? That finish. That celebration. The emotion. It was all just too damn good. Nothing else needs to be said. Take your green jacket and the baddie crown Mr. McIlroy.
It was written. We could all feel it. This year more than any other I think. It was never a question of if he could win a green jacket but when.
Throughout the entire weekend you could just see the steady uptick in swagger. It needs a name. The McIlroy Move? Ehh, perhaps not, but you know what I'm talking about; it's hard to miss. When Rory McIlroy is feeling it, the whole world knows. He moves different. His stride gets a bit longer, peppier, he plays with such freedom—he's completely dialed.
That little bounce he does—shoulders back, head high—it's a thing of complete beauty. You can practically see the confidence pouring out of him. Like he knows exactly who he is, and he's making you see it, too, just by simply walking.
It started on moving day. That chip in eagle set the tone for what would be one of the best rounds we’ve seen from him at Augusta National.
And then came that shot on the 15th. He resembled Tiger.
It was too soon for that moment to solidify his green jacket, but it earned him baddie status. The walk-off finish the sexiest thing you can do in golf. And do it on a Saturday at Augusta National? Swoon-worthy. Rors had us all blushing.
Love him or not, McIIroy is just one of those magnetic players. With the ability to pull you in and leave you completely awe-struck. His emotions on the course and candor off the course during pressers, is why we admire him. He’s one of the realest in the game, ready to serve up his opinion neat, no chaser.
The emotion, it can’t be overstated. In 2011, we saw a man collapse under pressure, plagued by the ghosts of Augusta National for years to come. Yesterday, we watched that same man fall to his knees in triumph after achieving a feat only five others have in history. A dream came to fruition on golf’s biggest stage.
I’ll be honest, that was a side of Rory I needed to see. His greatness can’t be questioned, but lately, with the burden of time and expectation mounting, Rory’s relatability had waned for me. I needed this reminder that the guy that I’ve been rooting for since I was a teenager was still the same cheeky chap that made me so enamored with men’s golf for the first time since Tiger Woods.
I needed to see him, Rory the human. In a moment where all composure is lost, truly feeling and embracing the moment. He felt mortal again. Reminding us all, from those around 18 green to us at home that there’s no timeline on a dream. If you want it. You earn it. Never stop showing up for yourself until you do.
It was a flawed victory, but a victory nonetheless. It was the best possible outcome any of us could have dreamt up. What Rory displayed was beyond baddie status. There’s not a word strong enough.
This is Rory’s moment, but we'd be remiss not to mention just how good our roster of baddies were at Augusta. Consider this the official post-Masters baddie report card.
Lots of mocked-up moments from Min Woo and JDay.
Ludvig was looking solid thru 70 holes
