This week, men’s professional golf is headed to Oakmont for the 2025 U.S. Open, where Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion. But, before we get to Oakmont, we must talk about the winners and biggest gear stories from this past week in professional golf. Switching things up slightly in this weekly Trend Tracker, let's also highlight the one (or maybe two) individual clubs that stood out in their respective tournaments.

Early in the week, it was all about Rory McIlroy’s driver. He did okay with it on Thursday, but his Friday afternoon round was one I’m sure he’d like to forget after carding an 8-over 78. After McIlroy's round on Friday, he had this to say when asked about his driver:
So I went back to a 44-inch driver this week to try to get something that was a little more in control and could try to get something a bit more in play," McIlroy said. "But if I'm going to miss fairways, I'd rather have the ball speed and miss the fairway than not. I was saying to Harry going down the last this is the second time this year I've tried the new version, and it hasn't quite worked out for me. So I'd say I'll be testing quite a few drivers over the weekend.
Now, on the flip side, I think the most important club we need to talk about is Ryan Fox’s 3-wood that he hit into the 18th hole when playing it for the 5th time today as part of the playoff with Sam Burns.
The club in question is a Srixon ZXi with a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 8x. To be able to elevate a shot like that from the fairway took some serious speed and some very solid contact and Fox was up to the challenge. Here's a look at the rest of his bag:
Driver: Srixon ZXi (Tour DP)
3-Wood: Srixon ZXi
Utility: Srixon ZXi
Irons: Srixon ZXi5 4-5, ZXi7 (6-PW)
Wedges: Cleveland 50, 56, and 60
Putter: Ping Anser 2

Over on the LPGA Tour, Jennifer Kupcho won at the ShopRite Classic with a final-round 66. She hit nearly 70% of her fairways and just over 70% of her greens for the week (note, this was a 54-hole event). One more fun stat, she was 0-for-0 for sand saves and didn't hit a single greenside bunker during the event. She plays a full bag of Ping - a brand that continues to have huge success on the LPGA Tour.
Driver: Ping G425 LST
3-Wood: Ping G430 Max
Hybrids: Ping G430 (4&5)
Irons: Ping I230 (5-UW)
Wedges: Ping S159 (54 & 58 with S-grinds)
Putter: Custom Ping PLD Ally Blue Onset
Similar to how Rory’s driver occupied a lot of the gear talk in Canada, I’m not here to talk about the winner on the DP World Tour (although I should note Connor Syme did win the KLM Open by two shots). Instead, I’m here to talk about the second-place finisher, Joakim Lagergren. Why, you might ask?
Well, here’s the thing with Joakim, he came in 2nd using a Wilson DynaPwr Carbon driver. Yep, you read that right, a Wilson driver. Sure, Wilson has been out on the professional tours for decades, but it’s been a long time since one of their drivers was in contention during a big-time event. Even though Wilson has been doing a great job with their gear for quite some time, especially in the irons and wedges department, this finish demonstrates that what they are doing with their driver line is working.

The new for 2025 Wilson DynaPWR driver and woods series is without a doubt the best line up they have ever put into the market and even if people are’t rushing to the stores because of Joakim Lagergren, I think this finish draws a line in the sand that Wilson means business when it comes to high-performance at the highest levels.
