When it comes to turning heads over the last couple of years, Jason Day has turned a lot with his fashion on the course, and for good reason. He, with help from Malbon, has brought a much more relaxed look to his wardrobe, which is a far cry from his early career's tighter athletic fit.

And it's this desire to do things his own way that has extended well past his closest and into his golf bag since becoming an unattached gear free agent in 2022.

This change has brought with it an era of experimentation to Day's golf bag similar to how going his own way has also shaped another Aussie's bag—Adam Scott. This openness to try things is once again on full display at the AmEx this week on the PGA TOUR, where Day showed up with a TaylorMade driver from 2019 (an M5), an even older fairway food from 2015 (AeroBurner TP), plus a new set of Avoda curved-faced irons.

I could talk myself into circles on whether going through gear changes is a good or bad thing, but overall, I believe it to be a net positive for almost every golfer if they go through the proper process. The reason I believe this is because not only can new equipment (or at least equipment selected with an open mind) help with physical performance and measurable numbers, but with mental performance in the form of confidence.
I believe this to be true when someone is using one brand of clubs, too.
The other element that mostly goes unnoticed by regular gear observers is that, even though Day is using some older gear at the top end of his bag, he's using technology to his advantage by using graphite shafts and larger oversized grips on his irons.

It's a change like this, the actual connection to the club, which I think is a more difficult thing to swap than a driver club head anyway. The best part now, is this week at the AmEx, we get to see how these changes are really paying off.
