Wedges occupy a unique space in the world of golf equipment because they have to deliver precision performance while still looking like… well, wedges. Clean lines. Compact shapes. Nothing too flashy. This is where engineers face one of their biggest challenges: how do you meaningfully advance performance without altering the looks beyond what players expect at address?
That’s where construction and manufacturing techniques come into play. The real innovation often happens under the hood, with strategic weighting and materials like tungsten doing the heavy lifting. And that’s exactly the approach Callaway Golf has taken with its newest Opus SP+ wedges to push performance forward while keeping the classic profile players trust.
Opus SP+ takes on the best qualities of Opus SP, with lower launch, more spin, and engineering control. We’ve taken the Spin Pocket and made it larger; we’ve hollowed out more of the sole, and doing that allows us to put Tungsten up in the topline. We have a larger Spin Pocket than we had in Opus SP. We’ve also added even more Tungsten up top to raise the CG, which allows us to flight the ball lower for more control.

Now to be clear, these aren't replacing the current Opus wedges and instead they are an extension to deliver more control in the higher lofted options, as of right now the Opus aren't going anywhere.
The three-piece construction of the Opus SP+ wedges features tungsten weighting, a MIM (Metal Injection Molded) face, and a soft cast 8620 body, which work together to raise the center of gravity to help generate more spin.
The Spin Pocket on the SP+ is 25% larger than the core SP wedges, and they also have 23% more tungsten high along the flange compared to the Opus Platinum. This generates greater trajectory control and makes it easier to flight the ball lower and with more spin—the ideal way to control distance.

With a new 17° groove angle featuring a tighter pitch spacing (this is just a technical and nerdy way of saying that the new grooves are sharper and closer together), resulting in more groove contacting the ball to channel away moisture and grab the cover to generate spin.
In the prototype stages of creating the Opus SP line, Callaway took more than half a dozen shapes and profiles to the best players in the world to get feedback on their preferred shapes.
The winner was "6 Profile", which features a precise leading edge and classic teardrop shape in the address position to inspire confidence. Callaway truly looked at every opportunity to create the most comprehensive wedge line they have ever offered.
With the Opus SP+ wedges only coming in lofts from 54°-60°, the grind matrix has been curated to offer versatility for almost any player type.

The Callaway Opus SP+ wedges are priced at $230 each and are available for pre-sale starting today. They are scheduled to hit retail stores starting on March 6th, and will be available in lofts from 54° to 60°
