New Level Golf Delivers Quality And Performance

New Level Golf proves that you don't have to be one of the big guys to deliver high-quality forged irons built right.

I am a golf company's worst nightmare.

Not because I cover equipment for a living, but because of my background and experience as a fitter and club builder...let me explain.

You see, it’s one thing to design equipment, another thing to manufacture it, but it’s the final assembly step that many companies—especially some direct-to-consumer ones—get very wrong. And, as a club builder (and true appreciator of properly assembled gear) with access to an array of quality control measuring devices, I’m happy to call out those that don’t deliver on their promises of quality to the end consumer.

This is where I believe New Level Golf is different.

Founded in 2018 in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the premise that high-quality forged irons can deliver performance to golfers of all abilities, New Level focuses on providing clubs that deliver precision and control through the bag.

They not only focus on creating great products—something they have done since being founded—but they also place a premium on building their clubs to tight tolerances at their HQ, unlike other more price-focused brands that drop ship stock sets to the end consumer.

I recently had the opportunity to test out their newest 702 Series built as a combo set featuring the 702 MB (8-Pw) and 702 CB 4-7), along with a 702 + (plus) and the NLU-V2 driving iron, to see how they stack up and deliver on the promise of a true quality build.

The 702 Series Irons

Like many modern iron families, the 702 line from New Level has been designed to offer seamless blending between three sets for maximum performance. All three models provide a modern shape with tungsten positioned in the toe to boost MOI and increase stability on off-center strikes.

702-MB

This sleek and compact blade offers everything you want in muscle back iron with a sole that works well through the turf.

702-CB

This player's cavity blends compact looks (similar to the blade) with added forgiveness thanks to a shallow undercut that positions more mass around the perimeter and top of the club head.

702+ (Plus)

The 702+ occupies a unique space because it looks a lot like the 702-CB but with more offset and a longer blade length to increase forgiveness. What also sets it apart from other irons in this category from other OEMs is that the loft still match up directly with those of the other irons so you don’t have to mess with bending to properly blend irons for playability.

NLU-V2

Available in lofts of 18, 21, and 24, the New Level V2 driving iron delivers a confidence inspiring look from address and an upgrade over the previous generation by utilizing a C300 maraging steel face to generate more face flex and distance generating ball speed. The black finish makes the club look smaller from address, although it still has more offset than many comparable models.

The Verdict

Swing Weight scale.jpg

From a build perspective, I got exactly what I was looking for with the combo set of 702-CB and MB irons I tested. Lies and lofts that were on spec to what was prescribed, and swing weights that were bang through the set - a little industry secret is that this is harder to accomplish when building combo sets, but New Level nailed it.

As for performance, I tested all three models since they were kind enough to send an extra 702+ 6-iron, and the feel was very consistent between each one, which is a key component to a well-crafted set of irons.

The irons all work well through the turf, and feature a generous pre-worn bevel (aka chamfer) to increase bounce towards the leading edge and help the club maintain speed. The 702+ is certainly bigger than the other models, but that helps to make it stand out, and the added forgiveness is noticeable.

Last but certainly not least, for those who might be interested in building the ultimate combo set, the NLU-V2 lives up to the claims by being fast, forgiving, and easy to launch.
