Trend Tracker: Gear Notes From Texas Open, LPGA Tour, & LIV Miami

Plus: Gear stories to watch heading into The Masters

This week, the center of the golf universe is headed to Augusta National for The Masters, but before we totally clear the board for Masters Week, let's first take a look back at the week that was in professional golf from a gear perspective on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, and LIV.

New Putter, Big Results for Brian Harman

Brian Harman came into the Texas Open ranked 126th in strokes gained putting for the 2025 PGA Tour season, but after a putter switch this week in San Antonio that kicked a nearly 10-year-old putter out of his bag (a Spider OS from 2016) he walked away with the victory in a pair of celebratory cowboy boots.

The putter in question, which helped Harman gain +5.3 stroke on the greens for the week was a brand new prototype (for now) Zero Torque Spider putter from TaylorMade. There are no release details yet on this zero torque putter, but based on the visibility from this win in Texas, I would imagine the folks in Carlsbad are hard at work drafting up some sort of pre-sale opportunity as you read this.

When asked about the switch after his win, Harman was pretty honest about his limited knowledge on the tech details of the putter, but sure is happy about the results.

I also wanted to ask you, last one here, is there a story behind your putter?
Harman: Yeah, I changed putters this week. Like I said, I looked at my stats from last year and I probably had the best iron game of my career, approach to the green, and probably my worst year from 10 to 20 feet putting. So still really good inside 10 feet, but that section there is where I was getting all my looks and I wasn't making any of them. I had toyed with the idea of switching putters for a while. Picked that one up on Tuesday this week, it felt really good and it rolls nice, just kind of freed me up a little bit.
What make and model is it?
Harman: It's a TaylorMade of some sort. I'm not sure what all the letters and numbers on the bottom of it are, but it's good.
When you say you picked it up, where did you pick it up?
Harman: A putter rep just handed it to me and said try this one.

I love it! And, I think it offers a ton of great insight into the minds of a lot of world class players. They don't care about the name, or sometimes even the details, and leave that up to their fitters (or in this case reps) to guide them into the right gear. It's all about results!

One more thing, which goes back to something I have been tracking since the start of the season, is that Harman won using a Titleist TSi2 which dates back to 2020. This is the second win for a TSi series driver this year, the first one belonging to Nick Taylor and his Sony Open win.

New Shoes for Jon Rahn in Miami

I like to think of footwear as equipment and love testing shoes. And it appears that Jon Rahm has been doing some shoe experimenting of his own because he showed up to LIV Miami in a fresh pair of True Linkswear for the LIV event.

In the past, Rahm has worn Adidas and Travis Matthew shoes, so seeing a change like this as we head into the first men's major of the year will be something interesting to follow, As for the exact model, they appear to be the TRUE LUX Hybrid in an all white colorway. Rahm has talked several times about his feet and shoe performance in the past because he was born with a club foot, so whatever reason he has for making the change probably wasn't taken lightly.

Madelene Sagstrom Secures a win in Las Vegas

On the LPGA Tour at their matchplay event in Las Vegas at Shadow Creek, Madelene Sagstrom never lost a match all week (7-0) and came out on top in the final against Lauren Coughlin. The match went all the way to the 18th hole, even though Sagstrom was up by 4 holes at one point during the finals.

One club that helped guide her to victory was her driver, a Callway Elyte (core model) with a project X hZRDUS RDX Black.

What to Watch for at Augusta

If I'm being honest, I don't foresee any big driver changes for any of the world's top players, but I imagine there might be a few new wedges in play for those who want to maximize spin and control for the fast and undulating greens.

As for other things to pay attention to—some more likely than others—I've put together a quick-hitting list:

  • We could see a couple more GT280 mini drivers in play from Titleist staffers since several have been working into them for a couple of months now.
  • Adam Scott, your favorite gear nerd's favorite gear nerd, could go off and show up with 10 new clubs in the bag. It's not like he hasn't switched up irons in the past in between tournaments, and with the tightly mown fairways at Augusta National, anything is possible.
  • Hideki Matsuyama will have at least a dozen putters ready to rock. The man known for testing putters on a weekly basis (even after a win) is a gift to the putter world and will probably come armed with a few options.
  • Bryson DeChambeau might finally put his LA Golf driver in play. Although we're still checking the USGA conforming list for lower lofted models of the LA Golf driver to be deemed conforming (as of current publication), the driver he helped to design could be making its debut this week. It could be that this has been the plan all along (to build buzz), just like how he put new irons into play last year before the Masters and nearly won.

Either way, it's Masters Week lets go!!
