A Great Golf Debate Reignited: Should You Have to Tuck Your Shirt In?

You may say "because that's the rule." But the rule as it's written leaves a lot to the imagination.

At last week's Players Championship (and apparently in Hawaii, too), German golfer Matthias Schmid committed the cardinal sin of allowing his polo shirt to become untucked while competing. Not only that, he did not fix it.

You may know Schmid from his successes in the European Amateur (he won it back to back in 2019 and 2020), or his low-Am finish at the 2021 Open at Royal St. George's. Here he is at Sawgrass disrespecting the game we all love.

But is he? Or is he simply following the rules as he—28-year-old adult—interprets them? Many consider a faux pas. I bet Matti prob thinks he looks plenty...shall we say...neat?

From the 2026 PGA TOUR Handbook:

APPEARANCE OF PLAYERS

Players shall present a neat appearance in both clothing and personal grooming. Clothing worn by players shall be consistent with currently accepted golf fashion. The Chief Referee shall interpret this regulation, subject to the approval of the Commissioner.

A lot of interesting stuff there. Not just the presence of that adjective, defined by "of a place or thing arranged in an orderly, tidy way." One could easily argue—as I'm sure Matti has, given he's reportedly been tapped on the shoulder by the TOUR about it—that the tailored fit of his shirt alone may lend itself to a tidier look than if left untucked. (The "accidental untuck" look is not so tidy.)

It's also interesting that the Chief Referee winds up being the sole judge in the PGA TOUR's taste court. I imagine he doesn't lose much sleep over this one.

Earlier this week, Dan Rapaport and I discussed the matter on Dan on Golf, and we managed to disagree without calling each other names. I respect his, and anyone else's dedication to The Rules. Even if the current rule leaves it open to interpretation, I respect your right to feel strongly that they should be tucking it in. My only real question is...why? I'll submit that there are an awful lot of scenarios in which a tucked-in shirt looks better, more put together, more professional than the alternative. In fact, it's probably most of the time when we're talking about professional golf. But in this particular instance, I think a guy should be able to hang loose without a memo from The Man. I think any establishment reserves its right to suggest its patrons follow certain guidelines, but I think the underlying assumption of those guidelines should be that the people showing up to your establishment care about how they look enough already to make themselves presentable. The precedent is very much there. I'd venture to guess most people are showing up tucked. Especially if you keep it as broad as "neat," and you mean it.

I'm not anti-dress code. I just think the golf world is sharp enough to let its heroes and citizens decide them for themselves. Your uniform will always look better than the uniform.
