Life on the Line, Needs a Win, This is Where Tiger Woods Would Play, According to Steve Williams

Tiger Woods dominated plenty of courses back in the day, but according to his old looper Steve Williams, this is where he would tee it up if his life was on the line and needed a W.

There were a few courses that Tiger Woods dominated throughout his career. He won eight times at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge, eight times at Firestone Country Club, and became so engrained with Augusta National that he slipped on the Green Jacket five times, including in 2019 when he was 43 years old.

But according to his old looper Steve Williams, there’s one course prime Tiger would play if his life was on the line and needed to win a tournament: Torrey Pines.

“Torrey Pines,” Williams told Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz of the Subpar Podcast. “Obviously at Firestone he had a remarkable record but he just loved Torrey Pines. He had a bit of a fascination with that course because the first time he went to watch a golf tournament was at Torrey Pines, the Junior World was held there a number of times. And he just loved that course.

“It was a course that he said always suited his eye so when he said that a course suited his eye that was an indication of how much he loved the course.“

If you’re unaware, his course history was pretty good around that place, too.

He won the legendary 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey, but he also hoisted hardware at the Farmers Insurance Open seven times. That’ll do.

It’s still a bummer that we don’t know when we’ll see the Cat back on the golf course, but it was good to see him out watching Charlie this week play in the Junior North & South Amateur.
