I want to start this by putting a hand up. I’ve been the guy who wanted to play blades just because they look good and that’s what the guys out on tour do. But that phase didn’t last long, and I had to go through an ego check. Now I have TaylorMade P770s in the bag, and I’ve never been happier. So, I guess you could say Rory McIlroy and I are just a couple of guys looking for a little forgiveness.
At this week’s Dubai Invitational, the World No. 2 debuted a full set of TaylorMade P7CB irons, a big change for a player who’s gamed blades throughout his career with a few forgiving long-irons mixed in. McIlroy had a combo set of his Rory Proto blades and P7CBs in Australia at the end of the year, but this is the first time he’s rocked a full set of cavity backs.
And so far, the change is paying dividends. McIlroy made seven birdies around Dubai Creek Resort on Thursday to take the first-round lead at 5 under.
"If there's help to be had, I'll definitely take it,” McIlroy told the media after signing his card.
So, if you find yourself at a PGA TOUR Superstore or DICK’S over the weekend, don’t pick up the blades. Just don’t do it. If Rory McIlroy, the man with a Career Grand Slam to his name, is playing an iron with a little more forgiveness, you should too.
