They’ve been playing this event in Japan for years and it still feels weird waking up to finished scores. Now there’s no golf on today, what am I supposed to do with myself?
Anyway, after the first 18 holes of the Baycurrent Classic at Yokohama Country Club, three players are tied for the lead: Max Greyserman, Bud Cauley, and Brian Campbell. While Cauley and Campbell have never played in this event before, Greyserman must like this part of the world, because he tied for second in his tournament debut last season.
Baycurrent Classic: How to Watch, Tee Times
His iron play wasn’t sharp—40th in Strokes Gained: Approach—which led to eight missed greens. But his short game was there to pick up the slack as he got up and down seven times. In the end, it was five birdies, a bogey, and an opening-round 4-under 67.
Campbell rode the roller coaster a little more than Greyserman did. He bogeyed three of his first five holes, but managed to make the turn in 1-over 36. On his way home, he made three birdies and holed out for eagle at the par-4 eighth from 94 yards—he started on No. 10.
I’m kinda rooting for Campbell to win, just because it would make his 2025 resume that much more ridiculous. The guy has won twice (Mexico Open, John Deere Classic), but hasn’t finished better than T-32 in any other start. A true “if you ain’t first, you’re last” mindset. You have to respect it.
As for Cauley, he had himself a nice walk around Yokohama. He missed only four fairways, four greens, and got up and down every time. It resulted in four birdies, a clean scorecard, and a share of the lead going into Day 2.
Checking in with some of the big names, it would be wrong to start anywhere else but the hometown hero, Hideki Matsuyama. Aside from his driver, he couldn’t get anything going. Four bogeys and three birdies later, the Japanese star signed for a 1-over 72.
As for some others, Adam Scott and Sahith Theegala are tied for fourth at 3 under, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa sit T-25 at even par, while Max Homa, Wyndham Clark, and Min Woo Lee are 2 over and tied for 42nd.
If you’re looking to catch some of the action later Thursday night, coverage starts at 11 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.
