The playoffs have arrived, and I have mixed feelings about it.
Sure, the next three weeks are going to be a blast, but it also means golf season is coming to a close—thank goodness football is right around the corner.
Anyway, the top 70 in the point standings—minus Rory McIlroy—have made their way to Memphis, Tennessee, for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. And with the changes to the TOUR Championship now in place, the goal isn’t to try to get to No. 1 in the standings; it’s to get inside the top 30. When we get to the ATL, everyone starts at even—easy to understand why the Northern Irishman didn’t want to play four rounds in scorching-hot weather for no reason, right?
Surprise, surprise, World No. 1 and Champion Golfer of the Year Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite at +280. The next closest? Xander Schauffele at 18/1. It feels like Vegas is trying to tell us this thing is already over.
But we’re going to make some picks anyway! So let’s jump into our preview for the first of three playoff events.
TPC Southwind | Par 70 | 7,288 yards
Scottie Scheffler (+280)
Xander Schauffele (+1800)
Matt Fitzpatrick (+2200)
Tommy Fleetwood (+2500)
Justin Thomas (+2500)
Aaron Rai (+3000)
Ludvig Aberg (+3000)
Russell Henley (+3000)
Viktor Hovland (+3100)
Hideki Matsuyama (+3200)
Collin Morikawa (+3300)
Patrick Cantlay (+3500)
Ben Griffin (+4000)
Sam Burns (+4000)
Sepp Straka (+4000)
Cameron Young (+4000)
Corey Conners (+4000)
Chris Gotterup (+4500)
Jordan Spieth (+4500)
Harris English (+4500)
Matt Fitzpatrick (22/1)
Fitzy has been circling his third win since the start of May. In his last nine starts, he’s finished inside the top-25 seven times, and inside the top-10 five times, including in his last four starts. And in six starts at Southwind, the Englishman has three top-10s and is coming off a T-18 performance in 2024. There’s a lot to like about the '22 U.S. Open Champion in Memphis.
Daniel Berger (50/1)
At this golf course, Berger is an auto bet. Here’s a quick look at his finishes at Southwind: 1st (2016), 1st (2017), MC (2018), T-2 (2020), T-5 (2021). So, yeah, he’s going on the card. Simple as that.
Wyndham Clark (55/1)
Clark is one of the streakiest players on TOUR, so when he’s hot, you ride him. He’s grabbed top-20 finishes at four of his last five starts and tied for seventh in Memphis in 2024. Plus, sitting at 49th in the point standings, Clark needs a good week to guarantee his spot for the BMW Championship.
