I think I’m all set with New York golf fans for awhile. They crossed a line at September’s Ryder Cup, belittling and berating Team Europe, and on Sunday at Shinnecock Hills, they heckled Wyndham Clark, an American winning the United States Open, all day long.
Calls of “get in the bunker” after tee shots and jeers of “don’t choke, Wyndham” were thrown his way for the majority of the afternoon. Of course, this treatment is self-inflicted after he beat up Oakmont’s locker room last year, and Clark would be the first person to tell you that.
“Man, they definitely didn't want me to win,” he said, with the trophy by his side. “It's pretty rare in an Open Championship or a major to have fans kind of boo against your shots or cheer for bad shots…Anytime someone said something negative to me, I replaced it with something positive. You know, some of it's self-deserved. I kind of brought it on myself…but I'm proud of myself that I battled through.”

Clark played with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in the final pairing, which no doubt contributed to his fan treatment. The Career Grand Slam was on the line for one of golf’s most popular players, and the crowds wanted to see it.
After signing his card, Scheffler gave Clark his flowers for how he handled the tough environment.
“Being in the arena is not for everybody, and I think it shows a lot about Wyndham, how he handled not only this golf course but I think the crowd today as well and is a well-deserving champion,” he said.
As for his plans to celebrate, Clark said they’ll be opening plenty of grape tonight.
The best part? He gets to enjoy it with his dad, who took a red-eye flight to surprise his son on Father’s Day.
