There’s Concern Surrounding the Overall Distance Standard Testing and its Effectiveness

The PGA TOUR and DP World Tour are concerned the Overall Distance Standard testing method won't have much of an impact on distance at the professional level.

On Wednesday, the United States Golf Association, R&A, PGA TOUR, and DP World Tour released a joint statement regarding the golf ball roll back and how balls are tested via the Overall Distance Standard (ODS):

“Feedback from the golf industry...related to the date of implementation of the updated ODS testing approach indicated that the majority support a single-date implementation (2030) versus a two-date, phased implementation (2028 and 2030).

The ODS is what governs how golf balls are tested and approved for play. And figuring out what the testing approach for conforming golf balls will be (aka the rollback conversation) has come with heated debate and input across the industry and governing bodies.

“Constructive discussions between the governing bodies, PGA TOUR leadership, the PGA TOUR Player Advisory Council (PAC), DP World Tour leadership and other stakeholders yielded three key outcomes: (a) recognition that distance continues to increase at the elite level; (b) a concern by the Tours that the updated ODS testing approach may not achieve the desired results; (c) a collective willingness to reconsider alternative approaches that may more materially impact the pace of future distance increases, while minimizing disruption to the overall golf market.”

In layman’s terms, the new testing approach will likely be implemented all at once in January 2030, instead of the originally-planned phased implementation in 2028 and 2030. As for the three outcomes mentioned above, B is far and away the most interesting.

The governing bodies and circuits have now recognized there’s concern around the ODS testing. This comes a month after Golf Channel reported that Cameron Young’s Titleist ProV1x Double Dot golf ball would likely conform under the new rules.

Because of these developments, the USGA and R&A will work closely with the TOUR, DPWT, and its memberships to review and test other options to limit distance at the professional level. However, there will be no change to the ODS testing until January 2030.

“The USGA, The R&A, PGA TOUR and DP World Tour are confident in the path forward and committed to working collaboratively, and with other key stakeholders, to ensure the long-term health of the game,” the last line of the statement read.

The USGA is hosting a press conference Wednesday morning at Shinnecock Hills, and we’ll keep you updated with further developments and comments.
