Report: Tiger Woods Must Decide on Ryder Cup Role Before Augusta

It appears Tiger Woods will make a call on his future sooner rather than later.

According to Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press, Woods is the top—and only—choice to captain the Americans at the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor. The PGA of America would like clarity on his intentions before the Masters in April. Ferguson reported that two people familiar with the situation characterized the timeline as a soft deadline, not an ultimatum.

Woods addressed the possibility last week at the Genesis Invitational—an event he hosts through the TGR Foundation. His hesitation isn’t desire. It’s bandwidth.

“I'm trying to figure out what we're trying to do with our tour,” Woods said. “That's been driving me hours upon hours every day and trying to figure out if I can actually do our team, our Team USA and our players and everyone that's going to be involved in the Ryder Cup, if I can do it justice with my time.

“Serving on two boards and what I'm doing for the PGA TOUR, I'm trying to figure out if I can actually do this and serve the people that are involved and serve them at an honorable level.”

Woods currently chairs the Future Competition Committee and remains deeply involved in reshaping the TOUR’s long-term schedule structure—changes he has suggested could begin rolling out as soon as 2027.

“I thought I spent a lot of hours practicing in my prime. It doesn't even compare to what we've done in the boardroom,” he added.

As for playing in the Masters, Woods continues to leave the door cracked. Two years ago, he made his 24th consecutive cut beneath the Georgia pines at Augusta National.

It feels like a matter of when, not if, Woods captains Team USA. The only question is whether that moment arrives in 18 months—or a little further down the road.
