Scottie Scheffler has made four starts this season. His worst finish? T-12 at the Genesis Invitational.
And yet, if you’ve been scrolling this week, you’d think the sky was falling.
Well—maybe for everyone except the World No. 1.
Scheffler’s only “issue” has been slow starts. He’s averaging 70.50 in opening rounds, ranking 117th on TOUR. Not ideal. But after Thursday? He’s been lethal: first in second-round scoring, eighth on Saturdays, second on Sundays.
That’ll work.

On Wednesday at Bay Hill, ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler addressed the chatter around his stagnant first rounds. Spoiler: he’s not exactly panicking.
“I mean, last year on TOUR I led in first round, second round, third round, and fourth round scoring,” Scheffler said. “So I'm not too concerned over a very small sample size. I've always been a guy that's been really good at staying in the present, doing what I need to do in order to go out and play well.
"So at 16 rounds, I've had 13 that have been really solid and three that haven't been as good. So I'm still batting at a pretty nice percentage. And so if I wanted to dig deep into it, I could completely change how I approach tournaments, but I don't think that would be very wise.”
It’s hard to argue with that logic.
And if there’s a place to flip the narrative, it’s Bay Hill. Scheffler has shot under par in all five of his previous opening rounds here and is already a proud owner of two red cardigans.
An opening-round 67 feels inevitable.
If he does post something in the mid-60s on Thursday, the rest of the field might already be playing for second.
Scheffler will tee it up alongside defending champion Russell Henley at 10:20 a.m. ET.
