Jon Rahm Accuses DP World Tour of ‘Extorting’ Players

“I’d sign tonight.” Jon Rahm says one change would end his standoff with the DP World Tour.

Last month, eight members of LIV Golf secured conditional releases from the DP World Tour. Jon Rahm wasn’t one of them.

The terms were straightforward: pay outstanding fines, commit to additional events, fulfill media obligations, and withdraw any pending appeals. The players who complied—Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig and Elvis Smylie—can now tee it up in LIV events that clash with DPWT tournaments without incurring further penalties.

Rahm chose a different path.

On Tuesday, ahead of LIV’s Hong Kong stop, he met with the media and didn’t mince words about how he views the situation.

“I don't know what game they're trying to play right now, but it just seems like in a way they're using us to—they're using our impact in tournaments and fining us and trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer, and it's just in a way they're extorting players like myself and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game,” Rahm said.

According to the Spaniard, the DPWT has asked him to commit to a minimum of six events, two of which would be selected by the tour. Since turning pro, Rahm has consistently met the four-event minimum requirement. What he doesn’t like is the idea of being told where—and how often—to play.

He maintains he plans to hit that four-event mark again later this season once LIV’s schedule wraps up.

“But given on the back nine, right, we have the Omega Masters, I believe, Irish Open, Wentworth, French, Dunhill, Spain,” Rahm said. “Out of those events, I would love to play my four in there, given I'm going to the Spanish Open, three of those I am going to play, and I fully intend to play three of those. I would love to.”

Rahm ended his monologue with a clear line in the sand: if the DPWT reduces the requirement from six events to four, he’d “sign tonight.”

For the two-time major champion, the dispute boils down to a single word: freedom. Rahm wants autonomy—to choose when he plays, where he plays, and on which tour.

“I just don't like the situation,” he said. “I think we should be able to freely play where we want and have the choice to play where we want and not be dictated what we do. Especially myself. I can't speak for others; only myself.”

Earlier this year at the Dubai Desert Classic, Rory McIlroy publicly urged Rahm and Hatton to recommit to Team Europe and settle their fines with the DPWT.

“We went really hard on the Americans about being paid to play the Ryder Cup, and we also said that we would pay to play in Ryder Cups,” McIlroy said. “There’s two guys that can prove it.”

Rahm addressed that comment Tuesday as well.

“That statement would make a lot more sense if all 12 of us were being asked to pay, not only just the two of us,” Rahm rebutted. “There's more intricacy that goes into this whole situation, right. While I understand why he's saying that, we all do it for the love of the game, it's a different situation than what we usually see.

“I'll gladly pay my way to go on the Ryder Cup, not have to pay to still be a member of the DP World Tour and fulfill a commitment that I'm fully willing to commit.”

Here’s the counterpoint: the other 10 members of Team Europe don’t have fines to settle because they never left. Loyalty comes with a clear runway. Hatton, after paying his dues, now has one.

If Rahm continues to resist the DPWT’s terms, his Ryder Cup future will remain in limbo.
