On May 25, 2024, Grayson Murray passed away. According to a statement by his parents, Eric and Terry Murray, the cause of death was suicide. The news shocked the golf world, and players participating in the Charles Schwab Challenge that week wore red and black pins in his memory. The colors were based off Murray's favorite hockey team, the Carolina Hurricanes.
“We would like to thank the PGA TOUR and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support,” Murray’s parents wrote in the statement. “Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”
More than a year removed from his death, he’ll be honored on Monday, October 6, with the Inaugural Grayson Murray Classic at Raleigh Country Club in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. There will also be a gala dinner held at North Ridge Country Club, and all proceeds will go to the Grayson Murray Foundation, which is focused on mental health and addiction care.
“Grayson inspired so many by being open about his personal mental health challenges during his professional golf career,” Jeff Maness, president of the Grayson Murray Foundation, said in a statement. “Now, through the Grayson Murray Foundation, we will continue to share Grayson’s story to help destigmatize the conversation on mental health topics in our society. And we will fund programs and services that provide hope and healing to individuals from all walks of life.”
The field includes five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, Chesson Hadley, Jason Gore, Stephan Jaeger, Jason Kokrak, Martin Flores, Steve Wheatcroft, and Richy Werenski.
Fans who want to get involved can donate to the Grayson Murray Foundation, and bid on items in the online auction.
