Golf Is Getting its Own Version of the NFL Combine

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlory are set to headline the "Golf Channel Games" in December—think NFL Combine or NBA All-Star Weekend.

We’re getting yet another primetime, under-the-lights golf event this December, but it’s going to be a little different this time around.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy will captain two four-player teams in the “Golf Channel Games” on December 17 at Trump National Golf Links in Jupiter, Florida. This won’t be a traditional golf match, but instead, the players will be able to showcase their skills in a variety of different ways—think NBA All-Star Weekend or NFL Combine.

“(The formats) give players the chance to showcase their skills across unique challenges and offer fans a new way to enjoy the game in the postseason,” McIlroy said in a statement.

Let’s take a look at the four different challenges the guys will face:

Timed drive, chip, and putt: This will be a solo competition where players try to drive it a total amount of yards, chip within a determined distance to the pin, and pour in a certain number of feet of putts.

14-club challenge: You’ve probably seen these on YouTube. It’s a closest-to-the-pin challenge where players take turns pulling a club from a single bag, and when a club is used, it can’t be used again. These are really fun if you’ve never watched one.

Timed shootout: This is a four-player alternate shot on three holes, but members of each team are staged throughout the hole: one on the tee, one on the fairway, and two around the green. Lowest score in shortest time wins.

Captain’s challenge: For the final one, Rory and Scottie will go head-to-head. They’ll hit from predetermined distances, including a 100-yard wedge shot, 50-yard pitch shot, bunker shot, 50-foot putt, and 10-foot putt. The player with the lowest total proximity wins.

“The Golf Channel Games will be a great mix of skill, strategy, and pressure,” Scheffler said in a statement. “This will be a brand-new way for the players and the fans to experience the game of golf. Everyone knows how competitive we are, and I think the Golf Channel Games will be an innovative competition that will engage the viewers.”

The six other players and additional information will be announced at a later time.
