Maybe Collin Morikawa Should Ask Rory McIlroy What Putter He Should Use

Last year, Rory McIlroy suggested that Scottie Scheffler try a mallet putter. The rest is history. Maybe Collin Morikawa should give Rory a call after his struggles with the flat-stick continued on Thursday in Detroit.

At last year’s Genesis Invitational, Rory McIlroy suggested that Scottie Scheffler try a mallet-style putter. I don’t think Rory could’ve known at the time what would happen, right?

A few weeks later, Scheffler won the Arnold Palmer Invitational by five and went on to win six more times that year, including the gold medal at the Olympics. And in 2025, not only has the Texan won three more times, but he’s also ranked 17th in Strokes Gained: Putting.

So, to recap, the best player in the world at everything outside of putting has turned himself into a top-20 putter all thanks to advice from the world’s second-best player.

That’s a nightmare for the rest of the PGA TOUR.

But now it looks like it’s time for the No. 5-ranked player in the world to ask Rory about what putter he should use.

Rocket Classic: How to Watch, Tee Times

Collin Morikawa shot a 3-under 69 during the first round of the Rocket Classic on Thursday, but putted like a blind man. And those aren’t my words, they’re his.

“Putted like a blind man, honestly. It's just an uncomfortable feeling shoving everything and not being able to square up the face,” Morikawa said. “It's tough. On greens that are—you've got a lot of poa growing in, you have to just be confident with your stroke, and there was just no confidence today after seeing a couple miss.”

He added that he’s been working on his iron game so much that his flat-stick is suffering the consequences.

Been there, done that, Collin.

But his struggles on the greens didn’t start in the Motor City. It’s been a struggle for a few weeks now. He lost 1.336 strokes at the Travelers Championship, 8.854(!!) at the U.S. Open, and 4.708 on Thursday (as of 2:45 p.m. ET) at Detroit Golf Club.

That’s tough.

And he’s not done tinkering. He told the media that it’s “very highly likely” he’ll try a grip change on Friday.

Pro golfers really are just like us. Always looking for something.
