If you didn’t see this coming, I don’t know what to tell you. As soon as it was clear Bryson DeChambeau was going to be part of this USA team, it was obvious his name would be quite popular once balls were in the air at Bethpage Black.
But, to be honest, it happened quicker than I thought.
Brandel Chamblee went on a DeChambeau-inspired rant on Golf Channel Monday, stating his viewers on YouTube are bots, and that he’s a “captain’s nightmare”.
Now, if you know me or have read my stuff in the past, I’m not the biggest Bryson guy—except during Ryder Cup week, he can do no wrong in my mind for the next few days. But Chamblee is reaching Kendrick Lamar level of hating. Or for the folks out there who have seen How I Met Your Mother, Bryson is Chamblee’s “pit” person. An individual someone is so obsessed with that they’d put them in a pit. Whenever the long-time analyst gets the chance to throw mud, he doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty.
But on Tuesday, a few of DeChambeau’s teammates came to his defense—as they should’ve.
Scottie Scheffler, who partnered with him at Whistling Straits in 2021 and went 1-0-1 as a team, said the LIV Golf member has been great in the team room.
“I think Bryson is a tremendous competitor. He's a great partner as well. I partnered with him in 2021 at Whistling Straits and he was a tremendous guy to be out to be golf course with. He's a great guy and a good friend…Like I said, he brings a lot of energy, the people love him, and I think he loves the opportunity to be able to represent his country. He's a multiple-time U.S. Open winner, and that means a lot to him. Being an American I think means a lot to him as well.
“I'm excited to kind of unleash him this week.”
Xander Schauffele, who is playing in his third Cup, shared a similar sentiment.
"I was telling Keegan, I feel like Bryson could be like the difference for us in a strange way from the standpoint of feeding into these fans, the style of golf he plays…Bryson is like, this is his arena. If he views himself as a gladiator golfer, this is as good as it gets."
“He's been awesome," Schauffele continued. "He's been awesome in the team room. I'm excited to sort of see what he can do, and hopefully get a lot of points up on the board because his points might hit harder than maybe my points, for example, just because of how he might celebrate and get these fans into this tournament quickly.”
As for the captain, Keegan Bradley said that this team needs DeChambeau’s energy.
“I think Bryson, just his golfing ability alone is an X-factor for our team, but also, he's a really fiery player. When you come to a Ryder Cup, you don't want guys to try to be something they're not. We have a lot of calm, mellow guys, so we need the energy from Bryson, and he brings that every day in practice rounds, in the team room, and hopefully in the tournament competition too.”
Again, as someone who isn’t exactly a Bryson stan, I can’t wait to watch that maniac this week. He’s going to be absolutely electric, and I plan on loving every second of it.
