Torrey Pines is a fine golf course, but man, it’s so good to be back at Riviera for the Genesis Invitational. I’ve never stepped foot on property, but outside of maybe three or four events, this week is my favorite of the year.
Ludvig Aberg might be the defending champ, but I’d give that distinction to Hideki Matsuyama, who is the last man to win at Riv. The Japanese star has finished T-13 or better in all four of his previous starts this season, including a playoff loss to Chris Gotterup at the WM Phoenix Open. It’s tough to see a scenario in which Matsuyama isn’t in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Thanks to its status as a Signature event, the Genesis field is loaded. Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth—they’re all set to tee it up on Thursday.
Sunday’s champion will go home with $4 million of the $20 million purse and 700 FedExCup points. As for the golf course, Riv is a par 71 measuring 7,383 yards.
