AUGUSTA, Ga. — Masters Week is undoubtedly the dreamiest seven-day stretch in our sport. Between the history-rich traditions, the technicolor backdrop that gets more unreal the more you spend time on the grounds, and of course, the golf of it all—early April is nothing short of golfers' heaven.
And it's not just about what happens between the gates, the energy surrounding the week bleeds into every crevice of the small town on the Georgia/South Carolina border. The locals embrace this event with such fervor to the point where it feels like every business is a bit of a time capsule dedicated to Augusta National and the Masters. And none more than Uptown Marketplace at Westtown.
The antique store is home to one of the greatest and probably largest supply of Masters memorabilia you could imagine. From vintage clubhouse gear to Tiffany and Co. silver pendants to old concessions cups that may or may not have tiny specs of mold on them (character-adding features!)—this place doesn't skimp on anything.
I took a quick visit to the store, and during the week you can always find the legend himself, Mr. Byron Eder, the keeper and collector of the famed 'Historical Golf Room'.
Eder is practically a Masters Week anthropologist, he knows every single detail about the tournament and tells stories through the items he scavenges for. It's one of the most impressive scenes you'll lay eyes on, and you can a new appreciation for the coveted tournament that has a 90-year archive behind it.
It's definitely worth checking out the next time you're in town, and especially if you're looking for one-of-a-kind Masters merch that will have a little more sentiment behind it.
My good friend Claire Rogers made an incredible point on the Masters merchandise and how patrons seem to be overdoing it this year. The hauls taking over social media are like consumerism's final boss. People are flexing their several thousand dollar spreads and it just feels a bit wrong. If it's your first time, then you know what, hell yeah! Go nuts. But for those who have the honor and privilege going each year, stocking up on merch like Masters Week armageddon is on the horizon, is crazy. We've gone a little too far, and I'd like to see things be reigned in just a touch.
