Regardless of the club type, one of the most discussed elements of a golf club is feel. Feel this, feel that, feels solid, feels hollow, feels clunky, feels too hard - designers are always searching for ways to make clubs "feel" better, and with the new Milled Grind 5 (MG5) wedges from TaylorMade, feel comes from forged.
“Inspired by feedback from Collin Morikawa, we set out to make the best feeling wedge TaylorMade has ever created," said Matt Bovee, Taylormade Director of Product Creation for Irons & Wedges. "The best players will tell you that having great feel around the greens is critical to having confidence in your short game, and to have the best feeling wedge, it needs to be forged."
One of the smartest things TaylorMade has ever done with its wedge line was to create continuity. Before the introduction of the Milled Grind line in 2017, it always felt like they were just kinda throwing things at the wall and hoping something would stick - anyone remember the XFT with the interchangeable faces?
But with Milled Grind, it has been about constant progression and refinement, and MG5 is the next step in that evolution.
"For the first time in my career, the MG5 lineup of wedges represents the closest thing to the perfect array of grinds, shapes, feel, and spin in one package that I've seen in over 45 years," said Greg Cesario, TaylorMade Wedge Master Craftsman.
Similar to how they have stepped up their game in the forged iron category, with irons like the P7CB, P7MB, and the P7TW—a model which has helped Scottie Scheffler win four majors—TaylorMade engineers wanted to bring that forged feel to their wedge line.
And they did all this while also adding to total performance, enter the MG5 wedges.
Saw Mill grooves allow for extremely tight groove geometry, while the spin tread face texture helps to channel moisture away to generate more friction. The result is 13% more spin retention than the MG4, according to TaylorMade's testing.
As with previous generations, the MG5 wedges feature a full selection of grind options that have been CNC milled onto the soles to eliminate human error from the process. This guarantees that each wedge grind is the same club after club.
With the MG5, TaylorMade has further expanded its "My" customization program with MyMG5. It allows for 12 characters of text in five locations on the wedge, with 15 different paint fills, plus more than 50 logos, including 18 licensed college logos.
Look, I'm gonna be real here. I could have spent close to an hour trying to rewrite and explain the grind options of the new TaylorMade MG5, but why do that when TaylorMade designed a fantastic graphic to showcase the options?
The SX-Grind is the newest addition to TaylorMade's grind matrix and fits into a very popular spot that a lot of other OEMs have been diving into with a wider sole and more effective bounce. Its the perfect fit for golfers who are looking for added forgiveness in softer conditions, spongier grass types, and out of bunkers but still want some versatility.
Even though the MG5 line is packed with sole designs that offer lots of variability, the SX-Grind proves that a wider sole doesn't have to be a one trick pony.
Oh, and for specs...
MG5 Wedges are available now for pre-order at TaylorMadeGolf.com and will be in stores on September 4th. They are priced at $200 each, except for the TG Grind wedges, which will retail for $220.
