Viktor Hovland Doesn’t Care If You Hate His Pool Floaties

Viktor Hovland is many things. Golfer. Comedian. Tinkerer. The list goes on. But one matters more than the others: Winner.

He proved that to be true when he stepped onto the range at TPC Scottsdale in February sporting pool floaties–fully inflated–on both arms. The metaphor writes itself: Viktor Hovland does his best to stay afloat. The drill, on the other hand, an honest attempt to force his arms further from his body throughout his swing, made the rounds of golf social media and was thoroughly meme-ified within a few hours.

“You have certain things you’re trying to work on,” said Viktor in an exclusive interview with Dan On Golf on Monday morning, “and I thought maybe the floaties accomplished that. I did it for a couple of days and then realized that wasn’t it, so they’re probably not coming back out again.”

I know I, for one, will sorely miss seeing the Norwegian with an inflatable pool toy on each arm, but alas.

While the floaties may not have paid lasting dividends–a T10 finish at the WM Phoenix Open was followed by finishes outside of the top 40 at the two subsequent Signature Events–Viktor has found himself back in the winner’s circle after defeating Scottie Scheffler in a playoff early Monday morning in another dramatic iteration of the Travelers Championship.

Viktor may be a renowned tinkerer, but when he’s on, he’s on. Whatever drills he might use, however he might produce the proper swing feels, when he has it going there aren’t many in the world who can beat him. And there’s nothing he won’t try to keep getting better.

“I’m not scared to try out new things,” Viktor said. “If it’s going to help me play better, who cares? I don’t care what it looks like.”

So keep an eye on your pool noodles, inflatables, and who-knows-what-else. After all, they could be the next tool in Viktor Hovland’s arsenal as he chases another victory. The European surely has the Open Championship–just a few weeks away–as his next big target.
