A Player in the U.S. Amateur Field Has Taken Golf Twitter By Storm—And For Good Reason

A cigar-smoking, Pine Valley-logo rocking, 62-year-old is playing with the kids at Merion—and he’s mogging all of them.

Until about 8 o’clock last night, I had no idea who Mike McCoy was. Now, the 62-year-old is a viral sensation on Golf Twitter.
On Monday night, the USGA posted a photo of McCoy from the opening round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur, being contested this week at Merion Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club, and I don’t think I need to explain why it went all over the place.
I mean, just look at this guy.
An almost-kicked stogie, multiple Pine Valley member logos, and the title of reigning U.S. Senior Amateur champion. When it comes to golf aura, that’s about as good as it gets.
It’s rare to see Golf Twitter unify over something, but the love-at-first-sight for McCoy did just that.
McCoy signed for a first-round 5-over 75 at Philadelphia CC on Monday, and was 1 over through 13 holes at Merion on Tuesday. It doesn’t look like he’ll advance to the match play stage, but I think it’s safe to say he won the week.
