J.J. Spaun Withdraws Just 5 Holes Into the TOUR Championship

After two bogeys and a double in his first five holes, J.J. Spaun withdrew from the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club with a shoulder injury.
After finishing 25th in his tournament debut last year, Spaun entered the week in Atlanta ranked 22nd in the FedExCup Standings and fresh off a share of 22nd at the BMW Championship.
The World No. 16’s season started on a sour note with four missed cuts in his first seven starts, but after missing the weekend at the Valspar Championship, Spaun won the Valero Texas Open two weeks later.
On the bright side, Spaun was guaranteed a paycheck at East Lake as soon as he qualified for the PGA TOUR’s finale. The last-place payout? $355,000. That might make his shoulder feel a little better.
Spaun is 10th in the Presidents Cup standings for Team USA, putting him in a great position to earn one of Brandt Snedeker’s captain’s picks. But if the injury lingers, that spot might go to someone else.
