Watch: Not Sure This Putt Preview Could Have Been More Wrong

Some broadcast features are pretty great: drone shots, tracers, angles that show off a course’s ungulation. But I think it’s time we put the AI putt prediction preview to bed. On Thursday, I’m not sure it could have misread a putt more if it tried.

During the first round of the Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, Scottie Scheffler, sitting at 2 under through his first nine holes, had a 16-foot downhill birdie putt at the par-4 10th. According to the putt prediction, it was a left-to-right slider that Scheffler had to play a few feet out.

Well, the World No. 1 took an alternate route, starting the putt outside right. The thing is…the putt went in.

Scheffler immediately gave the shot back at 11, and finished his day with seven straight pars to sign for a 2-under 68. Going into Friday’s second round, he’s three shots back of the lead held by five players, a group that includes Rory McIlroy, Tom Kim, and Patrick Cantlay.
