Perfect GIR Is Rare. Doing It Twice Is Just Showing Off.
Ruoning Yin put together another flawless ball striking performance Friday at the FM Championship—becoming the first and only LPGA player to hit all 18 greens in regulation twice this season.
There's a lot of cool stats in golf. From fairways hit to how many putts it takes to complete your round—but the infamous greens-in-regulation stat, more commonly referred to as GIR, might be the one that really separates the true sticks from the rest of us mere mortals.
During the second round of the FM Championship, major winner Ruoning Yin jumped 22 spots up the leaderboard with a nearly flawless 7-under 65. And the best part? She didn't miss a single green, going a perfect 18-for-18 in GIR.
To make things even more impressive, this is the second time she's done that this season (!). Earlier this summer, during the final round of the Mizuho Americas Open, Yin had another perfect day of ball-striking, and was almost perfect off the tee, hitting 13 of 14 fairways. But her fuel for this week's performance may come as a bit of a surprise.
After Friday's stellar round Yin said, "I had a bet with my coach. Because he told me he's going to leave tomorrow morning, and then yesterday when I finish[ed] he said, unless you finish 7-under today. I'll stay for the weekend. I was like, okay, here we go."
Did the man have a crystal ball, too? Because she got to the magical number right on the dot. One bogey on the day keeps Yin one off the lead at 9-under going into the weekend.
Despite owning this cool little record, Yin remains winless this season. She's made 15 cuts in her 17 starts, and has collected six top-10s, but is still looking for title number six in career wins. Two weeks ago, her Tour bestie Jeeno Thitikul earned her 10th LPGA win at The Standard Portland Classic.
"I know my game is in a right spot. I think I've been chasing the win for a little bit but my coach told me at the beginning of the week, he was just like, your game is right there. You just need to be a little bit more patient," she said. "This is what I'm doing."
