Chris Francoeur Fires First 59 of KFT Season

You know what’s crazy about golf? Maybe “crazy” is the wrong word. Incredible? Heartbreaking? Beautiful? Who knows. Anyways, I’ll tell you. No matter how well you play, you always could have done better. Even on your best day, you’ll walk off the 18th green thinking about that one birdie putt that burned an edge. It's inevitable.

I know it’s happened to me. I’m no professional golfer, so usually I’m lamenting about a couple bad bogeys I made down the stretch, but the point is the same. Anyways, Chris Francoeur just fired the first 59 of the Korn Ferry Tour season and, honestly, it could have been lower.

It’s been a season somewhat bereft of highlights for Chris, who has yet to tally a top-25 finish across 11 KFT starts. But that’s nothing a little 11-under-round can’t fix.

Don’t get me wrong, there were certainly highlights to Chris’s round. He drove the green on the 369-yard par-4 13th hole (his 4th hole), adding an easy birdie. A dramatic eagle chip rolled in on Chris’s 13th hole of the day, getting him to 10-under par and bringing a 59 (or better) squarely into focus. But there were also near misses, or shots left on the table.

A 7-foot birdie putt on his third hole rolled by the cup, as did an 11-footer on his 16th hole. An 115-yard approach came up 30 feet short. He didn’t make a single putt longer than 15 feet, which I’m convinced has to be a record for a round better than 60 (yes, I know, I’m not counting the chip-in, but still).

It’s the second sub-60 round in as many weeks between the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA TOUR, as Chris follows Michael Kim’s round at the 3M Open. Peter Malnati and Cameron Young scored 28 on the front nine at the Rocket Classic on Thursday and Friday, respectively, putting the golf world on 59 watch. And who can forget the three record-tying 62s that fell at Royal Birkdale. It's been a busy month for low scores.

Chris sits at 120th on the Korn Ferry Tour’s Points List, needing to find his way into the top-20 to earn his PGA TOUR card. With a win, the KFT’s current projected standings would have him just outside the bubble with just a few weeks remaining on the schedule to make up ground.
