Charley Hull is Making a Run at Evian—Fueled by Ice Cream

The recipe for a 5-under round at the Evian Championship? A rocky start, seven birdies over the final 12 holes, and one perfectly timed ice cream cone...well sorta.

After opening with two bogeys on her first six holes, Charley Hull flipped the script in a hurry. The English star caught fire, playing her final 12 holes in 7-under par, and somewhere in the middle of the heater, she stopped to grab a mid-round ice cream—because apparently that's how you fuel one of the best rounds of the day.

After her round, she explained that the ice cream cone isn't exactly included in her tournament nutrition plan. "I didn't eat the ice cream. My boyfriend got it for my caddie, so I held it for a minute when he was putting my club in the bag. I ate -- I eat every two holes, so I ate just a bite of my bar every two holes and then I had another special bar that I ate over two holes, and then I had this juice thing that I sipped over a couple holes and then I had a banana as well."

It's also sweltering this week, thanks to a lingering heat wave that's hit Europe pretty hard. Temperatures at Evian this week will hit the low to mid 90s, so Hull's caddie certainly has the right idea.

The ice cream might have grabbed the headlines, but Hull's position on the leaderboard is the part that matters most.

The 29-year-old has long been one of the biggest personalities in women's golf, but she's also been one of the game's most consistent major threats—just without the major trophy to show for it. After missing the cut at Hazeltine and being forced to withdraw from last year's Evian Championship due to illness, Hull's return to contention this week offers a reminder of just how dangerous she can be when she's healthy and comfortable on a major stage.
