I wasn’t planning on getting a little emotional at 10:30 a.m. on a Thursday, but I guess that’s what happens when Jim Nantz, one of the best storytellers to ever walk God’s green Earth, dives into his memory and pulls out an incredible moment between him and Arnold Palmer.
Nantz went on “This Is Football,” a show hosted by Kevin Clark, who lost his father this week. The voice of CBS Sports recalled a time when he was faced with a career-altering decision: stay with the sports division of the company, or move over to the news side.
His dad was battling Alzheimer's at the time, so Nantz wasn’t able to ask for advice like he’d surely done many times before. But after deciding to stay with sports, a life-long dream of his, Nantz saw Palmer at Augusta National during Masters week.
Nantz told Palmer the decision was hard because his dad wasn’t there to talk it through. What Palmer said next is something everyone has to hear.
Nantz and Palmer had a great relationship. So much so that Nantz was one of the eulogists at Palmer’s funeral. To get a little taste of how Palmer impacted so many people’s lives is pretty incredible.
And to Kevin, I’m sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
