Presidents Cup Notebook: Thoughts From Day 1 at Medinah

A docile crowd, terrible TV coverage, and the kid wins a point—notes from day one of the Presidents Cup at Medinah.

If I had to use one word to describe the first day of the Presidents Cup, it'd be underwhelming—and we'll get into why in a minute.
But after Thursday's opening four-ball session, Brandt Snedeker and Team USA hold a 3-2 lead over Geoff Ogilvy and the Internationals. On Friday, there will be five foursomes (alternate shot) matches before Saturday's double-header.
Now, let's jump into the notebook from day one at Medinah.

Notes from Day 1 of the Presidents Cup

Scoring Recap
Match 1: Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns defeat Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im, 1 up.
Match 2: Hideki Matsuyama and Ryo Hisatsune defeat Cameron Young and Xander Schauffele, 3 and 1.
Match 3: Justin Thomas and Jackson Koivun defeat Corey Connors and Nico Echavarria, 4 and 3.
Match 4: Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa defeat Ryan Fox and Adam Scott, 3 and 2.
Match 5: Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim defeat Patrick Cantlay and Chris Gotterup, 3 and 2.
Team USA leads 3-2 going into Friday Foursomes.
Justin Thomas and Jackson Koivun Deliver
Male golfer in a blue shirt celebrates with a raised fist and open mouth.
This was the one pairing I really wanted to see from Snedeker this week, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Team USA captain sends them out again on Saturday morning.
Thomas and Koivun were vibing out there. They were chatting the whole time, helping each other read putts, and ham-and-egged it enough to get the W. Of course, Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria only making three birdies helped the American cause.
But still, this seems like the perfect pairing for Sneds to lean on for the rest of the weekend.
Best Buddies Finally Win
Two male golfers in blue shirts and white pants walk across a green golf course.
Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns were 0-3-1 as a pair in team events going into play Thursday, but they were able to squeak out a 1-up win over Sungjae Im and Min Woo Lee.
But I wouldn't say they won it—the International tandem lost it.
Lee and Im had chances all day long, but couldn't buy a single putt, and when you let two of the best players in the world hang around, it's going to bite you.
Even with the win, I think I'm over the Scheffler/Burns pairing.
No Juice on the Ground
It’s not the Ryder Cup, we all know that. But there was no juice around Medinah on Thursday. No big cheers, no crowd pops, just a whole lot of subdued applause. Sam Burns made a critical birdie in the opening match on 14 to make it all square, and he had to beg for some noise.
And it wasn’t just the TV-effect. Our Nicole Rae was boots on the ground and tweeted this as the opening match was wrapping up:
Hopefully this changes over the weekend.
TV Coverage (Or Lack Thereof)
I know, I know. Everyone loves to bash on the TV coverage but man, it was really, really bad on Thursday.
It started right away, when there were just two matches on the golf course and we missed three tee shots from the first match on the second hole, and the only replay was Sungjae Im’s lucky bounce off the OB fence preceded by, “Just a moment ago.”
My biggest gripe? Why are we watching a minute of a player reading a putt or walking to the next hole? You could show so many shots during that time. It’s mind-boggling to me that the networks haven’t figured this out yet—except Sky Sports, of course.
